Norwich said they would speak to police about allegations of racist abuse directed towards their Cameroonian defender Sebastien Bassong on Twitter.

Bassong headed in a last-minute equaliser to give Norwich a 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday and was reportedly subjected to abuse on the micro-blogging website after the game.

Norwich chief executive David McNally confirmed that the club were aware of the reports.

“For those asking last night (Saturday), we will be following up with the police regarding the racist comments reported after the game,” he wrote on Twitter.

Police action after flares chaos

Police have said they will press charges against a group of 60 fans from Bundesliga club Schalke who held up Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt by lighting flares.

The start of the second half was delayed after the fans lit around 25 flares during the half-time break which filled the Veltins Arena with smoke.

“It was a sad situation, we have taken the details of about 60 people and will press charges. We video-taped the incident,” a police spokesman said.

The majority of Schalke fans loudly whistled and booed those who lit the flares.

Real Madrid slump

Real Madrid suffered a major setback to their Spanish title hopes when they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis late Saturday.

Betis midfielder Benat Etxebarria’s third goal of the season decided the game. All of his goals have been hit from outside the area.

“I try to be fair when my team lose and not look for excuses but it’s obvious that the side that plays Wednesday should not play on Saturday,” said Jose Mourinho.

“It’s true that other sides have a control over the calendar that we do not have, but I congratulate Betis who played a great game from start to finish.”

Defiant Wenger dismisses critics

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at his critics after his side fell further behind in the Premiership race.

Aston Villa held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw and Wenger’s decision to replace striker Olivier Giroud with midfielder Francis Coquelin late in the game at Villa Park was met by chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” from the visiting supporters.

Wenger insisted he did not need to provide an explanation for the substitution.

“I will not explain every decision I make, you judge the game for the papers and I sit here and explain to you our game.

“You can discuss every substitution,” Wenger said.

Klopp criticised by chief referee

Jurgen Klopp, coach of German champions Borussia Dortmund, has been criticised for his occasional aggressive pitch side behaviour towards Bundesliga officials.

“Even if Klopp afterwards says ‘I’m sorry’, at the end of the day, an impression is always left behind,” Lutz Michael Frohlich, the head of referees at the German Football Federation (DFB), said.

“The behaviour he displays on the sidelines shows so much aggression that it can spawn actual violence.”

Klopp has repeatedly clashed verbally with the fourth official during league matches.

Sneijder told to consider new offer

Inter have paved the way for Wesley Sneijder to leave the club in January after confirming the Dutch midfielder will not play again until he has agreed to an “adjusted” contract.

Sneijder’s contract with the San Siro side ends in 2015, and Inter sporting manager, Marco Branca, confirmed the Dutchman, who has been mostly on the sidelines so far this season, will not play again until he has decided on whether or not to accept a reduced offer.

Branca said: “We want to give the player all the time he needs to consider the terms of our proposal very carefully, so the coach and the club have decided not to use the player in this period until things are clearer.”

Zenit SP mull breakaway league

Zenit SP could break away from the Russian championship and form a new league with other teams from the ex-Soviet Union, the chief of its owner and main sponsor Gazprom said.

Zenit are locked in a dispute with the Russian Football Union after being fined and told to play their next two matches behind closed doors after crowd trouble earlier this month.

“The answer is positive, maybe we will play in another championship,” Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said.

“Very, very many people think we could play a CIS football championship and I am also a strong supporter of this idea,” said Miller.
