The Granada versus Real Mallorca Primera Liga game, halted after a linesman was hit in the face with an umbrella, will be played behind closed doors on December 7.

Granada had the initiative in the match after coming from behind to lead Mallorca 2-1 when the referee headed straight for the tunnel after one of his linesmen was struck.

The remaining 29 minutes will be played with the score as stood when the match was stopped.

Beckham dismisses Man. City hopes

David Beckham believes Manchester City have no chance of winning the Premier League title this season.

Roberto Mancini’s side currently sit top of the table, five points clear. Yet, former Manchester United favourite Beckham insists his old side will overhaul their neighbours.

“I don’t think City have a chance,” the former England captain, currently in Indonesia for the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Asian tour, reportedly told local media.

“This season they have got a good team and have some good players, but Manchester United have more experience and know how to win a championship.”

Cruyff set to go

Johan Cruyff is poised to lose his role on the supervisory board at Ajax.

The Ajax members’ council have called on the five-man board to resign following a dispute which had Cruyff at its centre. Ajax announced the outcome of the members’ council meeting last night.

A rift between Cruyff, an ex- player and manager at Ajax, and his four fellow supervisory board members had caused off-field disharmony at the club.

Cruyff will now be expected to make way, together with Edgar Davids, Steven ten Have, Paul Romer and Marjan Olfers, after the powerful council gave the supervisory board a vote of no confidence.

No spending spree for Bolton

Bolton manager Owen Coyle admits he will not be buying his way out of trouble in January. Wanderers have been stuck in the bottom three of the Premier League virtually all season.

“I’ve not had money anywhere I have been before,” he said.

“I came to the club two years ago, second-bottom of the league, and never spent a penny. If you don’t have money, then there are ways and means of improving your team.

“Whatever hand you are dealt you make the best of it. I’m at a fantastic club with great people and we all have to make sure we get ourselves out of the dangerous area we’re in.”

Podolski mulling transfer move

Germany striker Lukas Podolski has hinted he could leave Cologne at the end of the season in the search of European football.

The 26-year-old told Die Welt he is getting sick of the off-field problems in Cologne and cannot see his ambition of playing in Europe again being realised if he remains where he is.

“I was told the plan was to get back into Europe here, but we have failed and of course I have to ask myself why,” he said.

“Whenever I am with the national team, I always notice people shaking their heads when yet another story emerges from Cologne which has nothing to do with sport.”

Trap signs new Ireland deal

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni confirmed yesterday he has signed a contract extension until the 2014 World Cup.

The 72-year-old Italian coach has been rewarded by the Football Association of Ireland for securing the Republic’s place at next summer’s Euro 2012 finals following victory over Estonia in their qualification play-off.

Trapattoni’s deal will again be part-funded by businessman Denis O’Brien, who played a significant part in the FAI’s original acquisition of the former European Cup winner.

The Italian and his staff have previously taken two pay cuts because of Ireland’s financial difficulties.

Police question Chelsea’s Terry

British police have quizzed Chelsea and England captain John Terry over claims that he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Terry has strongly denied hurling a racist slur at Ferdinand during the stormy west London derby at Loftus Road on October 23.

The claims against Terry emerged after video footage circulated on the Internet appearing to show the England star using racist language.

Terry denied abusing Ferdinand, claiming that footage had caught him asking Ferdinand if he mistakenly believed he had racially abused him.
