In his article ‘The early years of the game in Gozo’ (August 18), Carmel Baldacchino gave or tried to give the impression that football in Gozo started in 1925. According to him, Victoria United was the first football club to be founded in Gozo on April 26, 1925.

Last May 21, a game was played between Għajnsielem and a selection of three Victoria teams – Victoria Hotspurs, SK Wanderers and Oratory Youths – representing the Victoria team of 1936 to mark the 80th anniversary of the first game in Gozo.

The venue was the Silver Jubilee Ground, where the first game was played 80 years ago. Għajnsielem had beat Victoria Scouts 2-1 and, thus, the first cup was won by Għajnsielem.

It was the Zammit Cup or the Prince of Wales Engineering Works, Bernard Zammit Mail Service 1936, which cup is still the centre of attraction in our club showcase among a great number of cups won by the oldest club in Gozo.

While we’re at it, allow me to mention some facts about the Għajnsielem club. For two years it had to play against British servicemen either stationed at Fort Chambray or on vessels anchored at the port of Mġarr because there was no other opposition. This according to Fr Bernard Hersey, the founder of Għajnsielem and, later, founder of the Gozo Football Association.

So, to set the record straight, the Għajnsielem club was formed in 1934, not in 1936 with other clubs that followed when the GFA was set up.
