Half a century after his father Antoine made a drawing of him while he was having a nap, Antoine Paul Camilleri produced a ceramic sculpture of his father’s pen design.

This figure, together with 14 others, is on display at the Malta Society of Arts Manufactures and Commerce along with 51 watercolours and pen drawings, six sculptures made out of a new medium similar to cement, and one cast in bronze.

The pen drawings, showing Maltese landscapes, were all made on site and later reproduced at Mr Camilleri’s house in watercolours.

The drawings, which took around two hours each to complete, include a three-piece work – drawn from the viewpoint of the helipad of St Luke’s Hospital – of Valletta, Ta’ Xbiex and Msida.

Also on display are designs – some which took five minutes and others an hour – that Mr Camilleri later transformed into sculptures.

Among them is a ceramic figure of himself, as a four-year-old, lying down on the bed, which his father drew in 1963.

Mr Camilleri, now 54, held his first personal exhibition in 1988, and completes his art pieces in his free time.

He started drawing at a very young age under the guidance of his father – artist Antoine Camilleri.
