Flyers retained top spot in the women’s Super League last weekend after beating Paola Hibs in four sets as the in-form Playvolley girls continued with their fine performances to go second in the standings after a hard-earned victory over a resilient FDL Office Group.

Flyers, again banking on the fine service play of Gertrude Zarb, opened a 2-0 lead after winning the opening sets 25-14, 25-14.

Hibs fielded a depleted team due to injuries but rallied in the third set to win it 25-23. It was the first set win for Hibs so far this season.

Flyers restored their original line-up in the fourth but still struggled to see off their opponents’ bold challenge, 25-23, winning the match 3-1.

Despite the 3-0 scoreline giving an indication of a comfortable win, Playvolley were indeed made to sweat by Fleur de Lys who took their opponents to the limit in the opening set which ended 30-28.

FDL were close to tying the match at one-all but Playvolley hit back to level matters at 21-21 after trailing for most of the set.

Another tight finale looked in prospect but errors suddenly crept into FDL’s game and Playvolley won four successive points to clinch the set at 25-21.

Playvolley opened a 9-1 lead in the third set and never relinquished that position, going on to take the set 25-13 for a precious victory that keeps them in contention for the title.

In a Division One match, the Mellieħa Tritones girls prevailed 3-0 over Mġarr (25-16, 25-23, 25-23).
