Balzan Flyers Crosscraft and Fleur de Lys Twistees claimed the re-maining titles at stake in the Malta Volleyball Association 2015-16 season which wrapped up with the Tony Parnis Cup at the Cottonera Sports Complex, last weekend.
The Balzan girls continued where they had left off the previous week as they overcame a determined Fleur de Lys Twistees side 3-1 after the latter had taken the opening set 26-24.
It was a hard-fought first set as FDL won it through consistent attacks from their outside hitters.
Nevertheless, the Flyers kept composure and clicked into rhythm after that partial setback with Zane Maly, once again, winning crucial points for her team and FDL losing heavily 25-14.
Although FDL tried to lift their game in the next two sets, the Flyers held their superiority as the girls in pink soon closed the contest 3-1 to collect their fourth honour in a memorable season.
In the men’s Tony Parnis Cup, with champions Valletta Mapei out of contention after their semi-final defeat to FDL, it became quite curious to see whether the other finalists, Aloysians, were strong enough to produce a decent challenge in the best-of-three series.
Fleur de Lys, however, had other thoughts and, playing some of their best volleyball this season, they made sure of the title in two matches which they won with an identical 3-0 score in favour.
Aloysians gave their all in both matches but with some regular players also missing, it was always going to be difficult for them to stop Silvan Gauci’s Fleur de Lys from chalking up their third title this season.
Earlier in th campaign, Fleur de Lys had won the John Bugeja Cup and Christmas Cup.
