This newspaper published what can only be described as an angry letter by a British reader lambasting the Times of Malta for daring to write an editorial expressing anti-abortion views (February 11).

The good lady appears to believe that majority views should always be slavishly followed and, given the prevailing pro-abortion attitude among Western society leaders, somehow, Malta has no right to plough its own furrow.

She goes on to spout the customary pro-abortion mantra that abortion is simply about choice on what to do with one’s body, ignoring the elephant in the room, which is the self-evident fact that there are two (or sometimes more) lives involved in a pregnancy, not one.

Pro-abortionists always ignore the fact that the ‘passenger’ in a pregnant woman’s womb is a human being, albeit one which is entirely dependant on its mother for sustenance and survival. It is therefore a field of great moral complexity, requiring erudite examination.

The idea that a majority view is always right is also subject to question, after all, in 1940, a large percentage of the German population (for various reasons including ignorance of the reality of what was unfolding in front of their eyes) were content with the prevalent political and military attitude of their government.

Many might justifiably argue the current Russian leadership also appears to enjoy misplaced popularity among its people.

I say well done to Malta in general and to Times of Malta for its editorial for flying the moral, as opposed to the populist and self-interested flag.
