Floriana have suffered a further setback after being docked another point over the long-running payment saga surrounding the transfer of midfielder Thomas Paris from Birkirkara in 2011.

Still reeling from the six-point penalty imposed by the MFA Licensing Board before the start of the season, Floriana have been deducted another point by the body’s Control and Disciplinary Board.

Sources told Times of Malta that Floriana have been sanctioned after it emerged that the cheque they gave to Birkirkara back in March for Paris’s transfer was invalid.

The Malta FA council sent the case back to the Control and Disciplinary Board in June after Birkirkara reported the matter to the association.

The latest punishment means that Floriana go into their first-round derby against rivals Valletta tomorrow with minus-six points after the Greens drew 1-1 with Naxxar Lions and lost 2-1 to Tarxien Rainbows in their opening Premier League matches.

The MFA Control and Disciplinary Board also ordered that Ħamrun Spartans be deducted a point over backdated payments.

Having been hit with a seven-point penalty after two former committee members were found guilty by the Malta FA of rigging a number of league matches last season, the Spartans will start their 2013/14 Division One campaign with an eight-point deduction.
