The top European destination for food and wine was Florence in Italy, with Paris second, Rome third and Sorrento in Italy fourth.

The poll, from Tripadvisor, came as UK travel organisation Abta began its annual convention in Palma, Majorca.

Italy dominated the list, with Siena in sixth place and Bologna seventh. Just above Edinburgh were the Spanish cities of San Sebastian (eighth) and Barcelona (ninth).

London has lost out to York and Edinburgh as a top European destination for food and wine, according to a poll of world travellers.

London failed to make the European top 10, but York was in fifth place, with Edinburgh 10th.

Tripadvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw said: “These awards recognise Europe’s best food and wine destinations according to millions of Tripadvisor travellers.

“With tough competition from destinations renowned for their culinary expertise, the UK should be proud to claim two top 10 spots, with York now well and truly establishing its place on Europe’s gastro tourism map.”

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of Visit York, said: “We are delighted by this news. York really is a foodie heaven with so many quality local producers, award-winning restaurants and speciality markets.”

Tripadvisor said Edinburgh “clearly had more to offer than haggis and deep-fired Mars bars” and offered cuisine from all over the world and good restaurants to suit any budget.

Europe’s top 10 destinations for food and wine were: Florence, Paris, Rome, Sorrento, York, Siena, Bologna, San Sebastian, Barcelona and Edinburgh.
