Fleur de Lys are the new leaders of the men’s Super League after beating Valletta San Antonio 3-1 (29-27, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17) in an enter-taining match at the Cottonera Sports Complex on Sunday.

The two teams had won all their three matches prior to their clash. Valletta had beaten FDL in the Super Cup earlier this season and were confident of repeating their act but FDL were all out to show the qualities that saw them being crowned champions last year.

The match was evenly contested with both sides enjoying good attacking moments and the two liberos working hard to keep the ball in play.

Valletta opened a 16-9 lead and seemed in control of the first set but FDL improved their reception and attack to put their opponents under pressure before clawing their way back into contention.

With the score at 23-all, Valletta fumbled two set points before FDL’s services decided the issue in their favour 29-27.

The champions were the better team in the second set. They surged into a three-point lead which they preserved throughout the set, extending it at the end to win 25-18.

Valletta fought back and reached the two technical time-outs first in the third set.

This time, they did not allow FDL to recover, clinching it 25-19.

In the fourth set, both teams tried hard to impose their play but, after opening a narrow 13-12 advantage, FDL became more efficient in their attacks and went on to win the set 25-17 and the game 3-1.

In another match, Mġarr beat Yahoos 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14) in a clash between two teams at the lower end of the standings.
