I refer to Fr Joe Borg’s contribution in your columns, particularly to his reference to sloppy homilies and mediocre reading of the Word of God.

First and foremost, the business of the Church is to speak out the Word of God. The basis of this is communication and it needs a good communicator.

So, the essential element at this stage is the material tool to provide good interaction between speaker and listener. Without a good relay system/loudspeaker, no message can be communicated properly.

One can have an eloquent speaker, well prepared and versed in his subject, but should his voice be inaudible to the listener, literally the whole concept of communication is lost.

Staying too close or too far from the microphone may also distort the sound. How can the Church authorities expect people to attend Mass when all one can hear is mumbling throughout the service?

Personally, I find very few churches that provide a good communication system. Start with the essentials!
