Senglea won the traditional Victory Day regatta at the Grand Harbour in Valletta yesterday.

For the red-and-yellow outfit from Cottonera this was their 23rd triumph and the fifth in succession. Senglea finished with a total of 66 points, 18 ahead of their direct opponents and neighbouring rivals Cospicua.

The Category B Shield was won by Cospicua with 64 points. Vittoriosa took second place when accumulatingd 44 points at the end of the five races contested in this class.

The Victory Day Regatta was once again organised by the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport and the programme included also an extra race in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the awarding of the George Cross to Malta.

The George Cross Kajjikki race, open for U-18 rowers, was won by Senglea thanks to Davison Micallef and Wayne Xuereb.

As in previous years, seven clubs registered in the Open category. Apart from Senglea and Cospicua, there was also the participation of Kalkara, Marsa, Marsamxett, Valletta, Vittoriosa and Birżebbuġa.

The Dgħajjes tal-Midalji category A race turned out to be a close affair. Here the four oarsmen from Senglea, Rhys Fiteni, Lawrence Ciantar, Clayton Darmanin and Donald Gilford, stepped it up in the final metres to finish first ahead of Cospicua and Marsa.

Senglea’s Lawrence Ciantar, Jacley Sevasta and Fiteni also triumphed in the Frejgatini race, the second event for the top class oarsmen. The winning trio held off the late challenge of Cospicua as Marsa settled for third place.

Seven clubs lined up for the Dgħajjes C tal-Pass b’zewg imqadef race. Marsa’s Dennis Thornton and Clive Casha took the lead around 100m from the end to cruise to an emphatic three-lengths win over Cospicua and Senglea.

There was a keen tussle in the last 100m of the Kajjikki race between the rowers of Kalkara (Jesmael Caruana and Nathaniel Caruana) and those of Cospicua. Kalkara obtained the maximum points for their club after the photofinish was consulted with Senglea ending in third place.

The last race, the Dgħajjes B Tal-Pass with four rowers, was to determine the winner between Senglea, Cospicua and Marsa.

This race carried the highest number of points with 24 going to the winners.

The Senglea rowers, Fiteni, Lawrence Ciantar, Clayton Darmanin and Donald Gilford made a strong dash from lane three with 250m to go and win this last race to secure the title for their club.

Marsa and Cospicua were second and third respectively.

At the end of the event, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport Clyde Puli presented the traditional shields to the officials and rowers from Senglea and Cospicua, respectively.
