Five members of the same family were remanded in custody yesterday after they allegedly attacked two policemen outside a wedding reception on Friday, breaking the arm of one of the officers and raining punches down on the other.

The men, Peter Camilleri, 56, his 21-year-old twin sons Jesrit Angel and Peter Paul, their cousin Carren Camilleri, 31, and their uncle Joseph Medina, 46, all of Żabbar, denied the charges against them.

All the men were attending the wedding of another of Mr Camilleri’s sons at St Anne’s wedding hall in Marsascala.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri, prosecuting, told Magistrate Antonio Mizzi that the incident was sparked by two women who started an argument outside the reception hall at about 2.30 in the morning.

Jesrit Angel hurled abuse at one of the women and Police Constable Francis Formosa tried to calm the situation down. When he requested Jesrit Angel’s particulars, the other men turned on him and started hitting him. Constable Jurgen Zerafa went to his colleague’s aid but was pushed to the ground and the men started punching him in the face. PC Formosa ended up with a broken arm while PC Zerafa suffered severe bruising to his face.

During their arraignment yesterday, the men denied injuring the police officers, assaulting them, violently disobeying the police and swearing in public. Carren Camilleri alone denied relapsing.

Magistrate Mizzi remanded them in custody.

Lawyer Peter Paul Zammit appeared for the father and sons while lawyer Marion Camilleri appeared for their cousin and lawyer Jeffrey Vella for their uncle.
