I was surprised and deeply saddened by the sight of three baby groupers harpooned and unashamedly placed on display by a prominent fish shop in Gzira among other baby breams and octopus. These groupers were less than 20 cm long. I am sure there is some legislation to limit the sizes of these lovely species and other fish caught, let alone sold!

Can the authorities concerned please address this issue, at least starting from the obvious and not allowing the sale of illegally caught fish.

Also, the sight of a net being placed around Crocodile Rock in Dwejra, Gozo, has been a wound for too long. That fishing nets are illegally placed around diving sites, including wrecks placed in recent years with taxpayers’ money, is common knowledge among divers. Another scar is the maze of markers indicating nets and traps around Dwejra and Dimitri Point.

Our sea is a treasure with huge potential which has been abused for way too long. Let us all address this problem and enforce already existing legislation. Could cameras be installed in prominent diving sites and wardens be provided to ensure better enforcement?
