The amount of fish landed between July and September dropped by nearly 15 per cent over the same quarter last year.

The National Statistics Office said the wholesale value of the landed fish also dropped by nearly four per cent to €2.1 million.

The decline was attributed to a drop in catches of various species, including 43 per cent fewer shrimps and a 37 per cent decline in catches of dorado.

Swordfish, the main species landed during the period under review, registered an increase of 6.3 per cent.

In total, fish landings amounted to just over 369kg, down by 14.6 per cent.

The volume of fish landed at the local fish market by Gozitan fishermen declined by 30.3 per cent. Lower dorado landings (52.4 per cent) and other species, mainly mackerel (23.7 per cent) contributed to this drop.

As a result, the wholesale value for fish landings by Gozitan fishermen amounted to €303,938, a drop of 6.1 per cent over the comparative period last year.
