Business in the aquaculture industry is going swimmingly, with annual turnover increasing by 116 per cent to €108.4 million in 2012.
This was driven by an increase of 104.5 per cent in sales from tuna farms.
Employees’ wages in this sector totalled €3.4 million, up from €2.9 million in 2011.
During the year under review, the volume of fresh fish sold went up by 82.7 per cent to 7,440 tons.
When compared to 2011, production costs went up by 107.8 per cent. This was partly due to increases in the value of purchases of live fish and fingerlings.
