Exactly 120 years ago, the first social club was opened at Paola. Although, at first, there were difficulties regarding its name, it was later unanimously agreed that it would be called Mentor Club.

The weekly subscription was to be one penny. Paul Boffa, who later became prime minister, was honorary president, N. R. Pace was chairman and Joseph Falzon, who later joined the Maleth Dramatic Co., was secretary.

The first organised event was a table tennis tournament, which was won by S. Falzon with 10 points, followed by V. Fava with nine points.

The club later formed a dramatic company under the direction of A. Gili Ross, with performances at the Empire Theatre.

Other details  can be found in the minutes of meetings  up to February 1940, as written and approved by the chairman and the secretary. The original minute book is in my possession.
