The first ever national public-speaking academy was recently held by the English Speaking Union Malta.

A total of 25 students, aged between 16 and 20, took part in the academy which aimed to help them acquire the skills needed to communicate their opinions and ideas to others when speaking in public.

Among the ESU Malta team of tutors was Speaker of Parliament Michael Frendo, Inspire CEO and athlete Nathan Farrugia, St Martin’s School principal Bernie Mizzi and University lecturer and screenwriter Marie Briguglio, who shared personal life stories and tips on how to speak and deliver presentations effectively.

“This experience pushed me outside my comfort zone. Knowing that I succeeded to speak in front of a group gives me great satisfaction,” a Sixth Form student commented.

A University student remarked: “I never imagined I could persuade others to listen to me in this way. I feel empowered by this experience and cannot wait for the debating academy.”

The ESU Malta is also organising a public-speaking competition on April 5, the winner of which will take part in an international public-speaking competition to be held in London in May. The competition is open to the public.

To apply to take part in the debating academy, to be held from April 18 to 20, visit www.esumalta.org. Early booking is recommended.
