A laser show and fireworks display will light up the Grand Harbour to mark the 10th anniversary of Malta’s EU accession.

The spectacle, being held on April 30, will be accompanied by performances by top local and foreign DJs.

International electronic music sensation Gareth Amery, producer of chart topping hit Concrete Angel, is set to end the night with a beat after performances from DJ J Joy and Carl Bee.

Addressing a press conference to announce the celebrations, Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg said the event was expected to attract thousands to the Grand Harbour area.

The festivities are being organised by the Foundation for National Celebrations, which Dr Borg said was organising some 60 events to mark all the national anniversaries being celebrated this year.

“On these important occasions we look towards the great prime ministers who brought about change: George Borg Olivier, Dom Mintoff and Eddie Fenech Adami. They are the authors of our story,” he said.

Ylenia Duncan, the first child to be born in a “European Malta”, will also be at the celebrations.

The 10-year-old was born at 12.10am on the day Malta became an official EU member.

“I have always known how important the day I was born on is, the day our island became truly European,” she said.

Dr Borg urged all those interested to make use of public transport. The public transport system will operate until the early hours of the morning.
