The last 10 taxi licences have been awarded by Transport Malta, with the highest bid offer running at more than €96,000.

The transport authority was bound to issue 50 new licences by 2012 and the last batch was granted after sealed bids were opened during a public session in the presence of a government notary, authority officials and the public.

Forty licences had already been issued and assigned.

There were 64 bids for the 10 remaining ones, starting at €20,000 and reaching €96,120.

Accepted bidders are now expected to apply for registration of the taxis within six months of being notified in writing that they have been successful.
