England denied Malta the joy of silverware in the European Championships as they beat the hosts in four team competition finals at The Dolmen, yesterday.
Malta ‘A’ failed in their bid to retain the European title as they were beaten by England 8-7 in the final. For the strong English side, it was sweet revenge after they were surprised by the Maltese in the group stage earlier this week.
Malta and England also contested the ‘B’ title match and yet again it was the latter who emerged victorious by the odd frame in 15.
The Malta-England rivalry was also extended to the seniors and U-21 competitions.
The English veterans needed all their experience to beat their Maltese counterparts 5-4 and in the U-21 showdown England eased to a clear 5-1 win.
In the ‘C’ final, Reunion Island added more woes on the locals after cruising to comfortable 8-2 victory.
Scott Muscat booked his place in the juniors individual final following a 6-4 victory over Ireland’s Jordan Doyle.
However, the Maltese lad’s hopes of victory were dashed by another Irish player, Jamie Gaffney. The latter claimed the honours after a thrilling 7-6 victory in the final.
England’s Ben Flack won the singles title after defeating Robert Brady, of Ireland, 8-7 while Emma Cunningham, of Northern Ireland, lifted the women’s crown after easing past Barbara Taylor, of England, 7-3.
