A man has apologised to two police officers for biting one and kicking the other after a brawl broke out on a boat and continued on land early on Sunday morning.

Bugeja felt it was not fair that he was being arrested while his attackers got away with it

Jason Emanuel Bugeja, 23, from St Paul’s Bay, pleaded guilty to assaulting and slightly injuring the two police officers, disobeying their orders and breaching the peace.

His lawyer, Edward Gatt, explained that his client was beaten up during a boat party on Saturday night. When the boat returned to shore, his assailants threw him into the sea.

After climbing out of the sea the fight continued before the police arrived. They arrested Mr Bugeja who was very drunk.

Mr Bugeja felt it was not fair that he was being arrested while his attackers got away with it. So he resisted the police, biting and kicking in the process.

He later apologised to them and said he was very sorry, Dr Gatt added.

Police Inspector Joseph Busuttil, prosecuting, confirmed that Mr Bugeja had apologised and said the police would also be charging the others involved in the fight.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella put off the case for judgment to today.

Meanwhile, Mr Bugeja was granted bail against a €50 deposit and a personal guarantee of €1,000.
