Fgura United missed the chance of closing the gap with leaders Żebbuġ Rangers last weekend after an unexpected slip-up to Mellieħa.

The northerners seem to have regained their early-season form after a poor patch had only yielded them four points from eight matches.

Żebbuġ conceded their first defeat of the season on Saturday following a 4-2 setback to St George’s. Rangers’ nearest rivals in the standings now are San Ġwann who only managed a one-all draw against lowly Mġarr as other promotion contenders Msida St Joseph also had to settle for a 2-2 draw with mid-table side Siġġiewi.

Pembroke, meanwhile, were beaten 1-0 by Kirkop to continue with their slide after an auspicious start to the season.

Pembroke have now failed to win a match in their last four outings.

After a rather quiet opening and playing in inclement weather, Mellieħa had the first chance of the match but Justin Zammit’s shot was slightly off range.

Mellieħa held the initiative and on 40 minutes Luke Cauchi’s splitting pass released Wayne Borg St John who chipped the ball past goalkeeper Brandon Bartolo.

Mellieħa went close again before half-time when Giovanni Galea’s shot from the distance, aided by the strong wind, was turned into a corner by the alert Bartolo.

Fgura’s first decent attempt on goal came on 59 minutes. However, Neil Curmi’s free-kick was parried by goalkeeper James Abela.

Fgura continued to show pro-gress and on 67 minutes they levelled matters thanks to substitute Carlos Camenzuli who headed the ball home from a rebound.

However, Fgura’s joy was short-lived as barely two minutes later Mellieħa were back in front this time with a Kyle Simiana goal from a Borg St John free-kick.

Giovanni Galea almost wrapped up the points for Mellieħa late on when he tried his luck following an inviting William Borg cross but Bartolo was up to the task to keep Fgura in the match.

However, Mellieħa closed all avenues to their goal and Fgura must now lift their game as their next match is against Żebbuġ.
