A fence has been put up along part of the Pembroke valley where a 17-year-old Russian student died two years ago after fracturing her skull in a 20-metre fall.
A month ago, Times of Malta reported that the area remained unfenced notwithstanding the tragic accident.
English language student Polina Rahman died on July 17, 2012, after falling into the valley adjacent to Villa Rosa, bordering Pembroke. Her body was found by foreigners a week after she was reported missing. They detected a foul smell coming from the valley.
On the night she went missing, Ms Rahman, who had arrived on July 15, had attended a welcome party by her school, Education First (EF), at Cabanas Club, in Paceville. She was last seen on July 17 at 4am in Paceville. Police sources had said they believed Ms Rahman had been walking along Prof. W. Ganado Street when she tripped and fell to her death in the valley below.
Residents of the area had said they would like to see some form of fencing put up, but it did not happen for two years.
Prof. Walter Ganado Street overlooks the valley and nothing separated the pavement from a steep slope that leads to a pathway below. This narrow pathway leads to a sharp drop into the valley. Thus, if somebody slipped off the pavement they could roll down the slope, past the narrow pathway and then fall into the rocky valley below.
A Transport Malta spokeswoman had said there were plans to install a railing behind the bus stop, marked as Portanier, located on Prof. Walter Ganado Street. There were also plans to shift the bus stop to a safer area.
