If you’ve been feeling like the summer heat may have come a little early this year you’re not mistaken since on one day last month the temperature reached 29.9°C – exceeding the normal temperature for this time of year by 6.6°C.

The average temperature in May stood at 19.6°C, which was 0.5°C higher than the climate norm of 19.1°C, according to the Meteorological Office.

It peaked at 29.9°C on May 26 while the lowest temperature recorded was 11.6°C on the night of May 5.

The warmest day in May was registered on May 23, 2006, when the mercury rose to 35.3°C. The coolest night was on May 4, 1970, with a low of 8°C.

“May in Malta saw a variety of weather conditions, ranging from bright hours of sunshine to light showers and heavy winds, but was on average still warmer and brighter than the norm,” Malta International Airport’s Met Office said in a statement.

Malta had a total of 324.5 hours of bright sunshine during May. The brightest days were on May 12 and 29, each enjoying a total of 13 hours of sunshine. Meanwhile, the dullest day recorded was the 18th.

May also experienced light showers which amounted to 5.6mm, less than the norm of 6.7mm. The bulk of the rain fell on May 2.

There was one day of thunderstorms and a day of foggy weather. For the major part, wind blew from the West by North direction at a mean speed of 9.3 knots.

The average sea temperature stood at 18.3ºC while the relative humidity was of 72 per cent.
