A young man was yesterday charged with violently resisting arrest and slightly injuring a policeman during the feast of St Gregory in Marsaxlokk on Wednesday evening.

Alfred Schembri, 23, from Birżebbuġa, was arrested after refusing to cooperate with drugs squad officers carrying out routine searches near the water polo pitch.

As Mr Schembri became violent he allegedly injured constable Luca Grasso.

Yesterday Mr Schembri denied violently resisting arrest, assaulting and slightly injuring a police officer, filing a false report, disobeying orders and breaching a probation order.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €3,000.
