A large part of Malta was hit by a brief power cut yesterday morning, giving some people a stark reminder of the electricity problems that face the grid during the summer months.

The corporation said power went out at 5.20 a.m., but started being restored within 25 minutes, and was almost back by 6.17 a.m.

The outage affected Ħal Far, Żurrieq, Qrendi, Tarxien, Żabbar, Marsascala, Żejtun, Xagħjra, Fgura, Vittoriosa, Gudja, Santa Luċija, Mellieħa, Żebbiegħ, Mġarr, Qawra, St Paul’s Bay, San Ġwann, Msida, and all of Gozo.

Enemalta said that the boiler tripped itself as a protection mechanism after an internal fault developed in the furnace.
