A father has been cleared of attempting to seriously injure a love rival in a road rage incident while returning his young son to his former girlfriend’s custody.

Ian Bonello, 35, of Dingli, was accused of attempting to seriously injure Dennis Sammut and driving dangerously and at high speed on Mdina Road, in Attard, in December 2008.

Mr Sammut, who was in a relationship with Mr Bonello’s former girlfriend, filed a police report saying the accused had overtaken cars to drive very close to him at high speed.

Mr Bonello, he claimed, drove very close as they both negotiated a roundabout before he eventually sped off.

The claims were denied by Mr Bonello, who was in a relationship with Mr Sammut’s ex-wife.

Mr Bonello said in his statement to the police that he was driving in the opposite direction.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke ruled that the case could not be proven and Mr Bonello was cleared of all charges.
