Ħamrun Spartans are looking for a new president to head the club after Lino Farrugia Sacco stepped down from his position just over a month into the job.

Dr Farrugia Sacco was appointed president of the Spartans at the club’s Annual General Meeting but his tenure didn’t last long as the retired judge tendered his resignation earlier this week.

Contacted by the Times of Malta yesterday, Dr Farrugia Sacco confirmed that he has quit his post, adding that he didn’t agree with certain policies and decisions taken by the club committee.

“I can confirm that I have resigned as president of Ħamrun Spartans,” Dr Farrugia Sacco said.

“There were certain decisions taken by the committee and other policies that I didn’t agree with, so it was only natural for me to leave my position.”

Dr Farrugia Sacco had succeeded Daniel Sullivan as club president but the Spartans will now have to appoint a new man at the helm.

Sullivan currently occupies the role of vice-president.

The issue is likely to be discussed during the next committee meeting at the end of this week.

Meanwhile, the Spartans have continued their preparations for their return to the Premier League.

This week, Ħamrun, who were promoted to the top flight as Division One runners-up at the end of last season, reached an agreement with Jonathan Holland who has been named assistant coach to Steve D’Amato.

The former Malta midfielder will also be in charge of the Spartans’ minors team.

Goalkeeper David Cassar has agreed to prolong his stay with the Spartans for another season while midfield duo Daren Falzon and Luke Sciberras have joined the Reds on loan from Naxxar Lions and Balzan respectively.

Everson rejoins Tarxien

Elsewhere, Everson Alan Da Lima is set for a return to the BOV Premier League as the towering Brazilian is rejoining Tarxien Rainbows, seven years after his first spell with the club.

Everson played for the Rainbows during the 2009-10 season, helping the club to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League standings.

Since leaving the Rainbows, Everson has had spells in the Czech Republic and Brazil.

Last season, he was on the books of FC Hoverla Uzhhorod, who play in the Ukrainian Premier League.

Everson is the sixth foreigner confirmed by Tarxien this season, joining Argentinian forwards Claudio Francis and Sergio Prendes, Swedish striker Alex Nilsson, Brazilian wingback Alex Alves and Nigerian defender Ebiabowei Baker.

Malta U-21 striker Luke Montebello, who spent last season on loan with Tarxien Rainbows, has joined Pembroke Athleta on a season-long loan from Valletta.

Gżira were also interested in Montebello but the 20-year-old opted to sign for Pembroke Athleta.

Montebello is the third Maltese signing for coach Winston Muscat who has also recruited Brandon Muscat, also formerly of Tarxien, and David Fenech, who last season played for Naxxar Lions.

Brandon Muscat, a product of the Hibernians nursery, is the son of Winston Muscat.

St Andrew’s have moved to boost their forward line with the arrival of Ryan Darmanin.

The experienced striker was out-of-contract after ending his short spell with Birkirkara.
