Approximately 12,000 families have benefitted from Housing Authority schemes over the past four years, with rent subsidies proving especially popular.

Under the rent subsidy scheme, families receive up to €1,000 a year. A total of 5,288 people have benefitted from the scheme since 2008.

Speaking at a press conference, Family Minister Chris Said said the authority was prioritising the renting out of vacant property.

It would also be introducing new social housing concepts to foster a greater sense of community, he added.

An information campaign has also been launched to educate the public about the authority’s 17 different housing schemes.

The schemes are aimed at different sectors of Maltese society, including first-time buyers, disabled people, victims of domestic violence and those previously in foster care.
