A most outstanding local event of 2013 was the landslide victory for the Labour Party. But was this really a landslide victory?
It is obvious that at least 36,000 voters were impressed by Labour’s image and electoral promises, such as merito-cracy, accountability and transparency. However, it was evident that there was a lack of transparency throughout the campaign, with many questions left unanswered.
Today, one can add: would there have been a landslide victory had Muscat and his party proposed the sale of citizenship?
Furthermore, would there have been a landslide victory had Muscat spoken openly of gay marriages as opposed to civil unions and gay adoptions as opposed to his declaration of his belief in a model of marriage between a man and a woman? Pope Francis has referred to gay adoption as an anthropological regression.
For many reasons, including the ones I have mentioned, many voters regret their decision to vote for a change at all costs.
This government, while considerably damaging Malta’s reputation, is often failing to meet the people’s aspirations.
