In two of his recent typically erudite but profoundly spiritual public contributions, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech was on track once again. In his conclusion to the conference on Pope Francis’s exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, Mgr Grech outlined the ethical framework in which politicians should encompass their role in society.

Service should replace power-seeking, understanding and constructive criticism should heal the divisions of partisan politics and populism, rhetoric should give way to action and individual aspirations should always promote the common good.

During the Pentecost vigil at Xewkija Rotunda church, Mgr Grech focused on the engulfing spiritual aridness.

A parched mind does not think, and accepts a monopoly of thought unchallenged; a shrivelled tearless heart loses its ability for empathy and compassion and a sterile will engenders a culture of death.
