The historical centre of Mellieħa is in for a €250,000 facelift after the local council managed to secure permission for works to start in January. They are expected to be finished by the middle of next year.

The square, known as the Misraħ iż-Żjara tal-Papa Ġwanni Pawlu, will be transformed mostly into a pedestrian zone. Trees whose roots have caused damage will also be replaced, railings changed, pavements built and an artistic water feature installed.
