A former security guard at the Lidl supermarket in Santa Venera was yesterday placed on probation after admitting to stealing more than €1,000 worth of items from the shop.

Anthony Portelli, 35, from Żejtun, pleaded guilty to taking the items on Wednesday at about 6.30pm and to being in possession of two penknives without the necessary permits.

Alessio Zammit, 56, from St Paul’s Bay, denied stealing from the outlet and helping Mr Portelli to carry out the crime.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna placed Mr Portelli on probation for two years and granted Mr Zammit bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000.

Police Inspector Sarah Magri prosecuted.
