Berlin yesterday dismissed calls for an emergency eurozone summit meeting on Greek debt, saying this should take place only when “meaningful” and “useful”.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular news conference that “it’s not a meeting as such that will help Greece, it’s a new (aid) package” that is currently being discussed at the level of eurogroupe finance ministers.

Officials in Brussels and other European Union countries earlier this week suggested a crisis summit could be held yesterday. Some later spoke of Monday.

“There is no concrete date,” Mr Seibert said.

“It’s not a competition about fixing a date,” he added.

Such a meeting should take place only “if it is meaningful and useful,” once countries have agreed on a second pack-age of financial aid for debt-strapped Greece, Mr Seibert said.
