Maltapost is taking part in a European stamp competition with national musical instruments as the main theme.

The Malta stamp set depicts musical instruments that were popular in the 19th century. The stamps portray details from the oil painting by renowned Italian artist Girolamo Gianni who was active in Malta in the latter part of the 19th century.

The musical instruments featured in the painting are the bagpipe and the drum being played by musicians at Valletta’s Porta Reale.

The contest, known as 2014 Europe, is an annual online event where creative entries from across Europe compete for the best design.

Voting is open until August 31 and can be done online on www.posteurop.org/europa2014. The winners will be announced in September.
