The European Commissioner for Energy, Günter Oettinger visited the works on the new Delimara power station extension.

He visited the main engine room and one of the engine enclosures and was shown the emission abatement area where he was given an explanation about how exhaust gases will be filtered to achieve the higher environmental standards required by EU Directives.

The Marsa power station will be partially shut down next year when the new Delimara plant starts operating but smoke will still bellow from its chimneys for at least another year. The old plant would be completely shut down when the interconnector cable with Sicily becomes operational in 2013.
