The MITP Theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta has been transformed into a Grecian theatre for MADC’s contemporary rendition of The Bacchae.

Under the visionary direction of Toni Attard aided by Lizzie Eldridge, the Bacchae take centre stage to release their female sexuality on the audience, captivating and enthralling them while singing in praise of their god Dionysus, expressing their lustful dreams, their feminine power and their longing for blood.

Singing to original music composed and performed by Alexander Vella Gregory and dancing to Sandra Mifsud’s choreography, the play narrates this greatest of all Greek tragedies. The language of Euripides is conveyed through the pen of Scottish playwright David Greig, whose powerful, lyrical words are expressed in contemporary English.

When the young Dionysus – icon, hedonist, son of Zeus – returns home, he is angered by the city’s refusal to acknowledge his divinity and exacts his revenge, unleashing the full force of the Bacchae’s female sexuality on the city and Prince Pentheus who is hell-bent on banning this new cult of Dionysus worshippers.

Coryse Borg, Veronica Stivala, Maria Pia Meli, Marta Vella, Laura Best and Nicola Abela Garrett are the Bacchae, with Kurt Castillo as Dionysus. The cast includes Manuel Cauchi, Paul Portelli, Pia Zammit and Philip Leone Ganado.

• The Bacchae is being staged again today, tomorrow and on Sunday and on November 4-6 at 8 p.m. Tickets may be obtained by phone on 7979 6232 or 9999 6232 or online: www.madc.biz. Tickets will also be available at the door.
