(Serves 6)

250g strawberries
250g raspberries
75g caster or icing sugar
600 ml whipping or double cream
1 tablespoon rosewater, or to taste
2 or 3 meringues, broken

• Put the fruit in a bowl, sprinkle on the sugar, and crush with the back of a fork. Whip the cream, and stir the rosewater into the fruit. Stir fruit and cream together, and then, at the last minute, so that they will not soften, the pieces of meringue, and pile into wine glasses or bowls to serve.
