England winger Ashley Young admitted he is in the form of his life after the Manchester United star’s cool finish secured a 1-0 win over Wales at Wembley on Tuesday.
Young converted Stewart Downing’s first-half cross with the kind of clinical strike typical of a player enjoying a sensational start to the season.
After moving to United from Aston Villa during the close-season, Young has taken his game to a new level and this was the third time he had found the net in his last three matches for club and country.
“It was great play by Stewart down the right and I found myself in the right position to finish it off,” Young said.
“I’m always confident going on the pitch and I’m even more confident now. I’m enjoying how things are going at the minute.
“Things have gone really well for myself and hopefully it can continue.”
Young’s goal moved England six points clear at the top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group after they also beat Bulgaria last week and Fabio Capello’s team need just a draw in Montenegro in their final match next month to guarantee their place in the finals.
“We wanted to get six points out of both games and we’ve done that,” Young said.
“It’s in our hands. It’s going to be a tough game but I feel we can go there and get three points.”
The victory over Wales was just merited despite a lacklustre second half display, but it ensured Capello’s men ended a run of four home games without a win going back more than a year.
