England and Scotland renew hostilities tomorrow in World Cup qualifying.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at international football’s oldest rivalry in numbers.

1872 – year of the first meeting – a goalless draw in Glasgow.

113 – Tomorrow’s match will be the 113th meeting between the two teams.

47-41 – England’s lead in the overall series, with 24 draws.

9-3 – England’s win at Wembley in April 1961 marked the record margin of victory in the fixture. Jimmy Greaves scored a hat-trick.

5 – Scotland hold the record winning run in the fixture, claiming victory every March between 1880 and 1884 and by an aggregate of 20 goals to eight.

England have twice had four-match winning runs, between May 1971 and May 1973 and again between May 1988 and November 1999, and can repeat that run with back-to-back wins in this World Cup qualifying campaign.

13 – former England captain Billy Wright made a record number of appearances in the fixture, between 1947 and 1959. Alan Morton and Bobby Walker share the Scottish record with 11 appearances.

8 – Steve Bloomer, a forward with Derby and Middlesbrough in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leads all goalscorers in the fixture – one ahead of Scotland’s Geordie Ker and possibly John Smith.

Smith is widely credited with a hat-trick in an 1881 meeting at the Oval, giving him seven goals against England in total, but some sources credit his third in that game as an Edgar Field own goal.
