As the bad weather and strong winds persisted, efforts continued yesterday to repair power lines damaged by the weekend’s violent storm that wreaked havoc.

Damage to high-voltage cables in exposed areas have been repaired and Enemalta employees are moving on to the faults on low-voltage lines, which, though affecting fewer consumers, were more numerous, the corporation said.

The unusually strong wind and adverse weather conditions that hit the islands affected large parts of both the high- and low-voltage networks, proving to be quite a “challenge” to Enemalta employees.

The works have been under way for the past 48 hours and are expected to continue round the clock for the next day.

The weather is expected to improve over the coming days, according to the Malta International Airport’s Meteorological Office, although showers and rough seas are expected until the early hours of today.

While apologising for any inconvenience, Enemalta said it tackled the faults according to priorities: those that posed a risk to the public; faults on the high-voltage network that affected a large area and low-voltage network faults.

It is urging the public to report anything that could be dangerous, such as uprooted poles and low-hanging cables, on freephone number 8007 2224/2122 3601.
