The second ranking competition of the season, organised by the Malta Weightlifting Association, was held at the Cottonera Sports Complex on Sunday.

The competition also doubled as a qualifier for the European Small Nations Tournament, which is to be held at the same venue next month (April 26-28).

Nicole Gatt was simply superb in the youth category as she shattered the previous records in the Under-53kg weight category by successfully combining her 47kg Snatch with a Clean and Jerk to total 112kg.

More new marks were established in the youth event. Malcolm Camilleri set new records in Snatch, Clean and Jerk and combined, with 38kg, 50kg and 88kg respectively.

Keiran Mifsud ranked fifth after a points best total of 145kg and 183 points while Miguel Grixti also slotted a points best with a total of 104kg and 150 points.

In the section for seniors, Charles Degiorgio, having sustained an injury in warm-up, was forced to retire despite a valiant effort on the mat. Ryan Agius was also made to call it a day after an unsuccessful Clean and Jerk attempt.

Chris Schinas accomplished a hard-earned points best after one successful Snatch of 70kg and clinching for a successful third and final attempt of 86kg in the Clean and Jerk following two failed attempts.

National team lifters Matthew Muscat Inglott, Rodmar Pulis and Jovan Reljic, all vying for a slot in the championship next month, were engaged in the highlight event of the day.

Reljic had a somewhat shaky start but he lifted the bar overhead for a 92kg Snatch in his third and final attempt, scoring a total of 202kg.

Muscat Inglott was successful with a solid 98kg Snatch and also a 121kg Clean and Jerk.

Pulis claimed first place by achieving a personal best 101kg Snatch. After a successful 125kg Clean and Jerk, he also attempted to beat his personal best in this lift.

With 131 kilogrammes on the bar, Pulis did well to power the weight overhead with a split jerk but was unsuccessful in stabilising and aligning his feet, leading to an incomplete lift by the narrowest of margins.
