Christmas: the word can conjure up so many warm nostalgic memories and feelings. Peace on earth, lit trees, wrapped presents, red and green decorations, laughter with family and friends, and then Silent Night.
But what about courage? “Be not afraid,” proclaimed the angel to the shepherds in the gospel of Luke. And that begs the question, what is it that we should not be afraid of? The answer is quite simple: do not be afraid to love.
We shouldn’t be afraid to open our hearts to others, to those in need, to forgive others, to embrace the blessings God sends our way. Even in the darkest moments of our lives there is the light of Jesus.
So this Christmas accept the word courage, don’t be afraid to love, open your heart to Jesus, to love Him more, receiving Him frequently in your heart in Holy Communion so that you may become servant to others by helping them in their needs, as our Mother Mary did with Elizabeth.
This leads us to say yes to the miracles that God places into small moments in each day. You will never regret sharing that love with others, and will be awed at the blessings that come back to you.
This is the true spirit of Christmas, the spirit of courage – do not be afraid to love, forgive and help others, and if we live it we enjoy Christmas all year round.
Charles Dickens wrote: “I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year.”
