Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia in Parliament on Tuesday gave details of the waiting times before majors in the Armed Forces of Malta could be considered for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.

Up to March 2011 there had been no stipulated period, then it had been made two years.

Since March last year the stipulated period had been dropped to at least one year. But having been a major for a year did not mean automatic promotion.

Dr Mallia was answering a question by Opposition home affairs spokesman Jason Azzopardi, who then asked if the shorter waiting time was made to accommodate the AFM Deputy Commander, who had bypassed 22 majors.

Dr Mallia said these issues would always lead to allegations, just as there was about no stipulated period at all before 2011.

He quipped that in order to pre-empt any other allegation, the current AFM Deputy Commander, Mark Mallia, was not his relative.
