There has been much talk about public transport. Although buses and trams can effectively ease traffic congestion by reducing the number of cars on the road, I think that the road network itself needs to be further upgraded in order to handle the ever increasing traffic.

There are two options for upgrading the road network: either demolish existing buildings in order to widen existing roads or build elevated highways which run over existing urban areas.

I think the second alternative would be preferable since the need to demolish existing buildings would be minimal. Building elevated highways which run from north to south of Malta and within the inner harbour area would alleviate the congestion at Marsa, Kappara, Birkirkara, Mosta, Sliema, Ħamrun, Paola, Fgura and other dense urban areas.

Elevated highways are part and parcel of the road networks of many cities around the world and although some may complain that they are an eyesore they are critical for the efficient flow of traffic within urban areas. Without them every major city would grind to a halt.

I urge the authorities to consider such a project – it will require a very substantial investment but everyone will benefit in the long run.
