Demand for electricity dropped by 2.3 per cent in 2013 after having risen by 4.3 per cent in the previous year.

The National Statistics Office said the highest consumption was registered in 2007 (2,296,296 megawatt hours), followed by 2,275,892 megawatt hours in 2008. The highest annual average demands were registered in 2005 and 2007, with 363 megawatts in both years.

About 20 per cent of all electricity generated occurs in July and August, with a monthly average of 407 and 405 megawatts respectively.

The NSO said 1,731 megawatt hours of renewable energy was generated in 2010, rising to 36,692 megawatt hours last year. Most of this renewable energy (83.7 per cent) was produced from photovoltaic cells.
