Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has said that the 2013 Budget is not an election Budget. He said this knowing that, just the day before, one of his MPs, Franco Debono, left no room for doubt on his intention to vote against the Budget.

So whatever Gonzi and Finance Minister Tonio Fenech include in the Budget can only be taken with a large spoonful of salt.

As regards the Prime Minister’s comment on Alfred Sant’s decision to contest the 2014 European Parliament election, perhaps one should remind Lawrence Gonzi that when he chose Tonio Borg to become European Commissioner, he knew that Borg is not just sceptical about certain EU values, such as abortion, gay rights, etc, but totally against. Although now, as commissioner, he has vowed to respect these rights where such rights are legal.

Another case of two weights, two measures à la Gonzi.
