At a summit at Dar l-Ewropa, Valletta, Ekoskola students from various schools gave a series of presentations about climate change and increasing global temperatures and the little things people can do to help tackle the problem.

Suggestions included the use of eco-friendly air fresheners, turning off electrical appliances when not in use, growing plants at school, installing solar panels in homes, lending books instead of buying new ones, using less packaging, car-pooling and using public transport, consuming less, using cloth bags and using rechargeable batteries.

The schools participating in the event included St Thomas Moore College Middle School, St Joseph College, Immaculate Conception School, Tarxien, St Ignatius College Secondary School, Ħandaq, St Francis School and San Anton School.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat, who was present for the summit, said people needed to practise what they preached and not only talk about the environmental solutions but actually implement them.

He added that he believed Ekoskola students could make a difference to influence decisions and said he would be taking up the students’ suggestions and raising them in parliamentary discussions.

Climate Change Ambassador Simone Borg also addressed the event.
