A 41-year-old drug addict was jailed for eight years and fined €5,000 for trafficking and possession of 200 grams of heroin.

Christopher Agius, of Floriana, pleaded guilty to trafficking and possession of the drug not for his exclusive use.

Mr Agius was arrested on Saturday evening after the police raided and found the drugs at his flat in Floriana.

During his arraignment yesterday, he also admitted drug possession in the past five years, committing the crimes within 100 metres of a band club and relapsing.

The prosecution asked Magistrate Doreen Clarke to place him at the forensic unit at Mount Carmel Hospital to start a drug rehabilitation programme.

Before handing down judgment, Magistrate Clarke also noted that Mr Agius collaborated with the police.

Police inspectors Jesmond Borg and Herman Mula prosecuted. Lawyer Daniella Mangion appeared for Mr Agius.
